Basses in strange places
A visual archive of bass guitars in unconventional locations.
A passion for the bass, unleashed
Made and meant to be shared – an absolute must-see for bass enthusiasts and visual explorers. Hi! I’m Henrik Bonde Hanfgarn, a bass player, passionate keeper of the bass vault, and curator of the Basses in Strange Places project. This site is my creative showcase, born from a desire to take the low-end out of the studio and into the wild. I recommend that you explore the project through these three topics:
- Bass Journeys: High-fidelity photography of basses in unexpected locations. A visual archive where iconic instruments meet unconventional landscapes.
- Bass Vault: A deep dive into the basses I love and trust. Get the specs and stories behind my beloved Fender Japan PB70 Precision Basses and much more.
- Bass Stories: The “escapade extraordinaire” – behind-the-scenes tales, my life as a player, and the adventures of a bassist on a mission to find the perfect bass and shot.
Dive in, explore the vault, and enjoy the journey!

The Bass Vault archive
A catalog of low-end heritage. From the polarizing aesthetics of the 70s to the surgical precision of Japanese craftsmanship, explore the instruments that define the collection.
Design parallels: Gibson Thunderbirds at Strøjer Samlingen
Where do you take basses designed by an American automobile legend?
In 1962, Gibson turned to Raymond Dietrich – the man behind iconic car silhouettes – to reinvent the bass guitar. We brought these “automotive” instruments to the Strøjer Collection, an architectural gem hidden beside a Danish brickworks. Set against a backdrop of over 100 dream cars, from the “Store Krone” Cadillac to roaring 1920s Alfa Romeos, we explored the intersection of chrome, curves, and low-end craftsmanship.
Antigua: Mistake or masterpiece?
From a 1970s factory quick fix to a modern cult classic. Explore the polarizing history of Fender’s most controversial finish through two rare P-Basses in the vault.

Bass Stories: More than wood and wires
Exploring the history, the hunt, and the soul behind the collection. Every collection has a heartbeat. For Basses in Strange Places, it isn’t just about the rarity of a 1978 Antigua or the lines of a vintage Mustang – it’s about the intersection of music, people, and the relentless pursuit of great moments. Discover the story of how a lifelong obsession with the low-end evolved into a digital coffee table book.
