Tucked into a narrow street in the historic heart of Naples, a few steps from the chaos of Spaccanapoli, Centro Chitarre hides in plain sight. From outside it looks deceptively small, but step through the door and you are surrounded by walls of instruments that stop you in your tracks. This is one of the few authorized Fender Custom Shop and Gibson Custom dealers in Italy, and they wear it proudly – the Custom Shop wall alone is worth the trip, a run of one-off masterpieces lined up like the murals this city is famous for.

For a bassist, the real joy is that the low-end gets genuine respect here. I lost track of time in front of an outrageous spread of Fender Custom Shop basses, and one in particular stopped me dead: a Journeyman Relic Jazz Bass in Aged Candy Apple Red. The lacquer on it was something else – a deep, glowing metallic crimson laid down in nitro so beautifully that even the light relic checking looked like it belonged, the kind of finish a photo never quite does justice. Nearby sat a rack of Laklands that felt like running into old friends from my own Vault, and some just-in Rickenbackers in walnut with a maple neck, all natural grain and that unmistakable Ric attitude.

The shop staff know their gear cold and clearly love talking it as much as selling it – the kind of unhurried, expert chat that turns a shop visit into a long story. Grazie mille, ragazzi!

Entering the door to Woodstock Guitars in Copenhagen feels like discovering a hidden treasure chest in the heart of the city. While the shop is compact and packed ceiling-to-floor with character, it houses some of the most impressive vintage bass gear in Scandinavia. From rare 1960s Fender Jazz basses to modern boutique finds, the selection is clearly curated by people who live and breathe tone.
