Frequently asked questions about the Surf Green Fender PB70
It gets catalogued both ways, which causes genuine confusion. Both are pale early-1960s Fender greens, but Surf Green leans slightly warmer and more muted while Sea Foam Green reads a touch brighter and more minty. Fender Japan’s own naming was not always consistent across runs, so the same instrument can appear under either label depending on the source.
Green is one of the less common PB70 finishes. Most Crafted in Japan PB70s left the factory in sunbursts, blacks, and whites, so a custom-colour green like this Dyna Gakki-built example stands out and tends to draw more collector interest than the standard finishes.
The PB70 is Fender Japan’s homage to the 1970s-spec Precision Bass, so it pairs a maple neck with the classic black pickguard of that decade rather than the 1950s or ’62 look. That combination is what gives it the unmistakable seventies P-Bass character.
