A single-coil time machine This Sting Signature bass is a masterclass in early-50s P-Bass. Unlike the mid-50s models that introduced body contours, this slab body design provides a massive, resonant Ash body that vibrates against the player in a way modern basses simply don’t. The heart of its tone is the original vintage-style single-coil pickup. While later split-coils were designed to cancel hum, this single-coil offers a raw, organic bark and a transparent high-end that is essential for that mid-frequency punch heard on every Police record. Combined with the vintage-accurate 2-saddle bridge and string-through-body design, it sits perfectly in a mix.
A distinctive feature of this bass is the Sting signature inlay at the 12th fret, but the real magic is in the neck profile. Fender Japan recreated the thick, ’50s C-shape that Sting’s own 1953 Precision – famously nicknamed “The Bass” – possesses after decades of wear. Interestingly, while the original ’53 was a workingman’s tool, this signature model has become a collector’s favorite because it was the only way for years to get a high-quality 2-Tone Sunburst slab-body P-Bass without paying Custom Shop prices. It’s a literal piece of rock history that you can actually take to a gig.
